Band Spotlight – Boston’s “Jet Black Sunrise”
Take two musicians playing the days away together on a couch in a tiny apartment, add in a Berklee drummer found in a newspaper ad, a roommate skilled at keyboards and a longtime childhood friend doubling as a well-qualified guitarist, and thus was founded the Boston-based band Jet Black Sunrise back in 2009.
Jet Black Sunrise has come a long way in the past 6+ years. From their humble beginnings playing various parties in Boston’s Mission Hill district, to their practices and songwriting sessions between apartment & warehouse practice spaces, to even strengthening their bond as a group during a treacherous elevator mishap…the group has matured in experience and even their sound. Their most recent release “Departures” (their 3rd album released just over a year ago) shows the progression of their sound from their beginnings in ‘pub rock’ to a more atmospheric and ethereal stadium band.
Consisting of members Matt Cronin on vocals/keys, Nick Fede on vocals/guitars, Jay Schneider on vocals/bass, Matt Smith on guitar and JC Zwisler on drums, the Departures album starts off with a nice buildup showcasing that atmospheric quality. “In Flight” introduces the instrumental and etheral trade off between guitar, bass and keys before the vocals and rest of the band crash in right in the middle of the song. They then take it down a notch with the thought-provoking lyrics and acoustic guitar/piano feel of “Rockview”. The tempo and edge begins slowly again with “Granite” (a great song to cruise to) before transitioning to “Gone”, a beautiful cacophony of acoustic guitar, piano and organ amidst pondering vocals and finishing the EP strong with the mid-beat groove of “Run Away”.
As well, Jet Black Sunrise’s earlier material shouldn’t be ignored either, check out “Skyscrapers” from their 2nd album release “Capture” released in 2013 here:
Jet Black Sunrise has graduated from performing at small parties to larger crowds and more cities. Having made their way across the Northeast US several times, they’ve shared the stage with other notable acts like The Deftones, Dr. Dog and Bassnectar, have performed to massive crowds at the famed Boston Calling festival and were even a featured Artist on The Rise on Jay-Z’s Tidal streaming platform upon its initial launch.
Jet Black Sunrise is currently working on tracks for their forthcoming album “Arrivals”, set to be released upon the masses very early in 2016.
